OSET
Board Meeting
The OSET board met October 11th
to plan next year’s meeting schedule. Since we do not have a program chairman,
it was decided that each board member would be responsible for 2 programs each
next year.
Therefore, Dave Heaton will do a
program on June 2nd and Nov 3rd. Trish Jenkins will be
responsible for May 5th and Oct 6th. Linda Lee Earl will
take the February 3rd meeting. I will be responsible for April 7th
and Sep 8th.
The club needs a Program Chairman. The
board hopes that someone will step up this year and learn “the ropes” in
preparation for the 2014 program year.
We also agreed that OSET would once
again set up at the Johnson City Home and Garden Show in February, the
Knoxville and Ashville Orchid Shows in March, Exchange Place in April and
Jonesborough Garden Gala in May. Please consider volunteering for these events.

Just
for Fun
I posted this link on OSET’s face book
page the other day and am posting it here for non -face book users. The link is
to a book review on a new orchid book published that tells the story of Michael
Kovach and the Peruvian Phrag that he brought back to the states and had named
after him.
“ The title of this new book by Craig
Pittman, "The Scent of Scandal: Greed, Betrayal, and the World's Most
Beautiful Orchid," is designed to catch the reader's eye but it is not to
be taken literally.”

Road Trip Sep 8th
ROAD TRIP!!!!!!!!!!! Sept. 8th. Our destination
is Owens Orchids in Pisgah Forrest, NC. (About 20 minutes south of
Asheville). Joyce Owens who is the owner and many of you knew her late husband
Bill.... awesome orchid growers. We have visited their greenhouses in years
past and have been really wowed! Very high quaility plants, great breeding and
many years experience behind the orchids at Owens Orchids. There will be
something there for everyone.
This will be a car pool trip just like our previous field trip to Marble
Branch Farms. I can drive and take 4 others. I would love another volunteer
driver or two. OSET will reimburse you for your gas.
We will leave The Gray Community Center at 8:00 am so we can arrive at our
destination around 10:00 ish. We can spend several hours shopping and touring
the greenhouses and then get lunch on our way back, probably around 1:00-1:30.
I'll work on finding us a place to stop for late lunch. We should be back in
Gray no later than 5:00 pm, perhaps earlier.
Joyce has graciously offered us a 25% discount on our orchid purchases.
This will take the place of an Orchid Society meeting for Sept.
If you have not gone on a field trip with us in the past, we have a lot of
fun and learn at a lot too from these experienced growers about orchid culture
and orchids that would grow well in our environments.
Please let me know ASAP if you can go/drive so I can be sure to have a
space available for you. The cut off date will be Sept. 1st to sign-up. You
can e-mail me or call me (423)349-8099.
Coming up:
We will have a regular OSET meeting OCT. 7th at the Gray
Community Center . Our Speaker will be the fabulous Tom Harper of Stone River

traveler. He will be bring us information on new things going on in the world
of Phals. from around the world as well as cultural info. for us right here in
TN. Put this date on your calendar!
Nov. 4th we will have a members swap and sell day. This
is a great opportunity to sell/trade your extra divisions that might be taking
up room in your growing space. It is also a nice time to pick-up a new orchid
